Sophomore Jenny Turpel

Turpel's Double-Double Not Enough As Thunderwolves Top Flyers

Nov. 28, 2008

Box Score

DENVER - A win for the Lewis University women's basketball team on Friday afternoon would have been their fourth in a row and the program's 500th. But history will have to wait, as the Flyers fell to Colorado State-Pueblo 61-56 on the neutral site of Metro State University.

Lewis was down 36-29 at halftime and made runs to knot it up in the second.

"I think our defense in the first half wasn't where it was in the second," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We did a better job in the second half and were within one possession a few times, but each we couldn't make that big defensive stop on the other end to keep momentum going."

Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) finished two points shy of her fourth straight 20 plus game with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) scored 12 and grabbed eight boards.

"Jenny had five offensive boards and Devon grabbed six." Carlsen said. "They really kept possessions alive and gave themselves extra opportunities."

The Flyers committed only 13 turnovers. Lewis shot 34 percent from the floor and 27 percent from long range.

"We were in the bonus before they were but couldn't take advantage of it." Carlsen said of her club's 7-for-10 performance from the line. "We need to get to the line more, especially when we aren't shooting the best."

The Flyers fall back to .500 at 3-3. Colorado State-Pueblo improves to 3-1. Lewis takes another stab at the 500th victory in program history when they face Metro State tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT
